‘It is how we embrace the great uncertainty of our lives that leads to the great transformations of our souls.’    Brandon A. Trean

How do you deal with a crisis, ‘a dramatic or emotional upheaval’1 in your life? They can come in various shapes and sizes; a financial crisis, a crisis in your health, or perhaps a relationship crisis. Right now you are doubtless being confronted by COVID-19 or maybe racial riots. Whatever crisis you face and however challenging it may be, the important thing is to be victorious in the crisis and deal with it well….but how do you do that?

A crucial key I have learnt in dealing with a crisis is that you cannot always control what happens to you, but you can control what happens in you. John Maxwell Share on X

A crucial key I have learnt in dealing with a crisis is that “you cannot always control what happens to you, but you can control what happens in you.”2    Your focus in a crisis needs to be on what you can control, and that is what is happening on the inside of you, and not on the external circumstances that you can’t control.

You can choose to react to a crisis by focusing on the situation and trying to control something that you can’t. However, this will only lead you down the path of anxiety, fear, depression and feeling inadequate and hopeless.  Are any of these familiar?  Or, you can choose to respond to the crisis by understanding what is happening in you and controlling that.

You don't always choose a crisis but you can choose how you think and feel about it, and how you deal with it. The external circumstances of a crisis don't determine this, you do. Share on X

You don’t always choose a crisis but you can choose how you think and feel about it, and how you deal with it.  The external circumstances of a crisis don’t determine this, you do. You can then respond to the crisis, rather than react, by choosing faith over fear, peace over anxiety and hope over hopelessness.  You can choose to be an overcomer rather than be overcome.

         When it comes down to it underlying any crisis you experience is an identity crisis. Share on X

When it comes down to it underlying any crisis you experience is an identity crisis. That’s because any crisis you experience is your unique perception of the crisis. Have you ever noticed that two different people can be in exactly the same crisis situation, one will thrive and the other can be overcome by it?  The difference is what is happening in a person’s thoughts, emotions and will as they experience the crisis. This is why in a crisis it is crucial to understand what is happening inside you.  So how do you do that?  A great place to start is by asking yourself three essential questions that will unlock your ability to deal with it.

These questions are;

  1. Who am I?
  2. Who do I want to be?
  3. How do I become who I want to be?

Yes, these are big questions! So, in the upcoming blogs, I will discuss them further and assist you to answer the questions for yourself so you can deal with any crisis in your life well.
